First of all I’d like to emphasize that in my personal and empirical opinion a family constellation by itself is not a therapy. Others might take a different point of view – and that is totally ok. It surely can be used in the context of a therapy or might be the initiating event for somebody’s decision to start a therapy – but, as I see it, intrinsically a family constellation is a deep soul-centered healing energy work.
A family constellation is a powerful method to help you recognise entanglements both in your family of origin as well as in your current family or relationship. It can help to remove old burdens from our souls that bind our energy and hinder our lives from truly unfolding.
Bonded by a deep love, a child unconsciously can often sacrifice its own best interests in an attempt to ease the suffering of a parent or other family member. A family constellation unveils these unconscious, hidden, and often debilitating dynamics which sometimes go back several generations in time based on events that happened in our families but totally unknown to us.
A family constellation is a profoundly sacred soul work, restoring one to one’s rightful place within the family system and thus also in life. Things are shown as they are and were – without egoistic points of view and without victim consciousness preventing us from getting lost in our own “story”. We become witnesses of all that wishes to be seen and to be healed – held in the protected space of the constellation circle.
Heart opening and sometimes mind-blowing insights help us to simply “acknowledge what is” and thus sow the seeds for a life in which we can live to our full potential and more at peace.
Constellation – general overview (from “Overview of Systemic Constellations” / Francesco Pimpinelli)
‘Constellation’ is a technical term used in human science to identify a system as a set of elements in relationship to each other. Through the Systemic approach we can see a situation or a problem within its entire context and understand which elements or relationships need order and harmony. Changing how the elements operate and relate to each other we move the constellation from a problem space to a solution space.
A constellation is a methodology based on a holistic view of human beings which includes body, emotions and mind. It gives us the opportunity to understand reality as it is beyond the limits of abstract and analytical thinking. It enables us to discover new and fresh solutions to problems and to support the achievement of desired goals.
The term “Family Constellations” was first used by Alfred Adler in a somewhat different context to refer to the phenomenon that each individual belongs to and is bonded in relationship to other members of his or her family system.
The main principles have been defined by Bert Hellinger in his work on Family Constellations. He has been influenced by different disciplines and therapies such as Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Psychodrama and Virginia Satir’s family sculptures. Hellinger has created an innovative and new approach to family therapy, which has opened up a new understanding with amazing results. He has discovered the Orders of human systems and how to use them to bring harmony, healing and reconciliation into families, groups, organizations, communities within countries.
Based on Bert Hellinger’s work Systemic Constellations have been further developed with different contributions from many others, e.g. Gunthard Weber (applications in organizations), Insa Sparrer and Matthias Varga von Kiebed (structural approach).
Nowadays Systemic Constellations are a larger set which include Family, Organization, Psychosomatic and Structural Constellations, to name a few types or application areas.
